Rae’s Rules to Remember #38: #IAmAFeminist

Today #IAmAFeminist started trending on twitter. I started using it and immediately was attacked for it by people that I don’t know. People assumed that I hated men and that if I didn’t hate men then I couldn’t be a feminist.

Gender equality. That’s what feminism is about. Equality of all genders -yes all because gender is a spectrum not a binary – regardless of their other identities (race, religion, ability, socioeconomic status, etc.)

I am really getting tired of having to explain to people what feminism is. A lot of times the people that claim that they don’t need it either don’t know what it is or are in favor of oppression.

It is important to note that when the movement started, it was to gain women equal rights to men, well white women anyway. As time went on the movement progressed. Movements have to change as time passes otherwise they will be useless. It’s 2016, yes we have come a long way. Women do have rights, I’m not saying that they don’t. But it’s not just about legal rights its also about treatment. Being catcalled on the streets, groped in bars, talked over by men in meetings. All of those things still need to be changed.
