Rae’s Rules to Remember #21: Why I am a Feminist

Many people have negative thoughts when they hear the word feminist. If you are one of those people, I suggest that you take the time to educate yourself on what that actually means. Hopefully this post could give you some insight into that

I am a feminist because I believe that women should have the same rights as men.

I am a feminist because I believe that men should have the same rights as women.

I am a feminist because I know that my worth is not determined by what is or what isn’t between my legs

I am a feminist because the people that tell me that being cat-called on the street by strangers is a compliment are full of shit

I am a feminist because I am the only person in the world who has a right to decide what happens to my body

I am a feminist because rape culture is real and instead of teaching “don’t wear that” we should be teaching “don’t be a rapist”

I am a feminist because I know that men can suffer from physical, verbal, mental, emotional, and sexual abuse but are constantly told that they can’t

I am a feminist because as a woman I have the right to decide that I don’t want to have children without being seen as “selfish”

I am a feminist because men shouldn’t believe that they can’t show emotion without being perceived as weak

I am a feminist because my rights are not based on being someone’s daughter or sister, but on the fact that I am a person too

I am a feminist because no one is ever “asking for it”

I am a feminist because intersectionality is important and I can’t say that I support a group of people and then choose which members of that group I support (Ex: I can’t be a feminist without supporting ALL women – women of color, LGBTQ, with disabilities, etc.)

I am a feminist because if I don’t support or believe in myself then no one else will

I am a feminist because being told that you do something “like a girl” shouldn’t be an insult

I am a feminist because people need allies

I am a feminist because cleaning, cooking and bearing children are choices not birthrights

I am a feminist because I have no reason to believe that I am less than the people around me

I am a feminist because I have absolutely no reason not to be

This list could really go on forever, but these are some of the reason that I am a feminist. If for some reason you don’t agree with these reasons, that’s on you.

I love that you mentioned that feminism helps men, too! They also get trapped in stereotypes or told they’re worth depends on things like how “manly” they are or how little they cry. What a relevant post!
