This or That? #30

Heyyy! Happy Monday (not really, cause its raining where I am but hopefully it’s a happy Monday for you) 🙂

In case anyone needs a reminder or is new to the Bookmark Chronicles, here are the rules: Every Monday I will post a This or That Challenge where we will choose between two characters or scenarios. On Friday we will see which scenario/character wins. Feel free to either comment your choice below or make your own post and link it back here! 🙂

By no means do you have to feel obligated to do every single challenge, but I would love to hear all of your opinions! If you can only really talk about one scenario then go for it. Also, if you have any suggestions please let me know!

Our topic this week is…

Do you prefer original fairy tales

OR

Retellings of fairy tales

So retellings would be like the Lunar Chronicles and other stories like those.

To be honest, I haven’t read any retellings yet, so I kind of have to choose originals. The Lunar Chronicles is on my TBR for 2016 though so I am excited to get to those. Even though I haven’t read them yet, I think that I will definitely like them more than the originals. I have this idea that the newer versions of the older stories will just be better because they’re more modern ya know? Maybe I’m wrong but I guess I;’ll find out soon enough.

What about you? Originals or remakes? Also, what other fairy tale remakes do you enjoy?  Let me know!

I haven’t read any retellings, really. I’d definitely go for originals, all the time, any time! But I hear great things about the retellings going around nowadays (Cinder and company, example)!

Originals! Although, I do enjoy retellings in movies…

Originals, because they are always very interesting. They are so much more complex than what certain popularized retellings *cough* Disney *cough* make them out to be (…and that’s coming from a huge Disney nerd). Retellings depend on how well they are done – certain retellings are not so great while others are brilliant. I enjoy retellings – heck, I wrote one and won a Young Authors contest for it in 4th grade! But I gotta go with the originals.

  5. I like the originals a lot but I LOVE retellings. I like it when authors spin the story in their own way. I might have to do a discussion post about this if I have the time 😀

Ooh, good question. Gotta say retellings–one of my favorite types of story, especially Robin McKinley’s books, which are amazing. Not to say I necessarily dislike the originals, they’re just simpler, less developed, with a greater focus on the legend or the spookiness or whatever than on the characters. I prefer stories with more detail and character development. 🙂

  7. What would my Mondays be without Bookmark Chronicles’ “This or That.” You’ve posed a tough question here. Hmmm, I want to say I like fairytale retellings better because it’s fun to see what twists authors put on them. However, if the original fairytales didn’t exist then there’d be no retellings, so I guess I have to go with the originals!

Oh this is so tough! As a teacher, I teach both, and I really like the originals! But maybe the retellings – I like how women are stronger and “fractured” fairytales are my favourite!

  9. I have to go with originals too- it’s a tough one cos I do like retellings, but in the end the original morals and stories win out for me every time
