Just a reminder that April is Autism Acceptance & Awareness Month (among many other things) and that if you want to support people with autism, there are certain things to look out for.
If you remember my article last year, I mentioned that you absolutely should not support Autism Speaks and I actually have an update on that. Autism Speaks has changed their mission and are moving away from looking for a “cure” and are focusing on understanding and acceptance. They now have 2 board members with autism spectrum disorder, when they previously had none. More of their proceeds are actually allocated to families/people with autism instead of research for a cure. And they finally seem to understand that autism is different for everyone on the spectrum.
This is great news and a step in the right direction so it will be interesting to see how it plays out.
For the time being, these are the organizations that you should look into:
- Autistic Self Advocacy Network
- Autism Women’s Network
- The Thinking Person’s Guide to Autism
- Identity-First Autistic
- Amythest Schaber – YouTuber
If you have more sources or disagree with what’s listed, please let me know and I’ll correct it.
Also, I will be attending a Neurodiversity Professional Development Workshop later this month and hopefully I will have more info to share with you then.
