Once Upon A Recipe: Blue Apron Meal #1

Hi friends,

First up in this upcoming food adventure is the first Blue Apron box! (note that this will be slightly different from the way that I usually write up the recipes I use. It will mostly be pictures).

If you’re unfamiliar with Blue Apron it is a subscription box that sends you ingredients for weekly meals. There are 3 plans that you can get: The Classic, Vegetarian and Family (4 people) and if you can, they also have wine pairings for your meal!

For two meals for two people, the overall cost (including shipping) is $51.95. That’s a lot for me to dish out every week honestly but you do get $30 for your first box when you sign up!

Blue Apron Meal #1 is….

Seared Steaks & Mashed Potatoes (with Steak Sauce & Roasted Carrots)

Ingredients:

  • 2 steaks
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • .5 lb russet potatoes
  • 2 scallions
  • 4 carrots

Knick Knacks:

  • 2 oz. cheddar cheese
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tsp molasses
  • 1 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp soy glaze
  • 1 tbsp red wine vinegar

So the great thing about this is that it all comes measured out for you and with step by step instructions.

  • Prepare the ingredients and start the steak sauce

  • Roast the carrots

  • Cook & mash the potatoes – I didn’t take a picture of the mashed potatoes but you’ll see them at the end
  • Cook the steaks

  • Slice steak and plate

This meal was seriously delicious and the homemade steak sauce was amazing. I also never knew how easy it was to make mashed potatoes!

I’ve been really curious about these meal boxes. I’m really glad you decided to use & cover them here.

I agree that $52(ish) bucks for 2 meals (4 if you consider each person’s portion as one meal) is a bit pricey, but, if you look at each meal individually, it’s only $13 per meal. It’s less than a meal out, & probably a lot healthier.

That previous paragraph is me trying to convince myself to try one of these services out myself. Please disregard. LOL

Question – where does the cheese go? Is it part of the steak sauce? The whole meal looks delicious & well-balanced.

    • That is true, the price per meal is pretty cheap. About that though, (at least with Home Chef – which will be up later today) you can’t just pick one meal so you HAVE to spend at least $49 which isn’t necessarily awful but I might as well buy my own groceries at that point.

If you try it let me know!! I do highly recommend it.

Oh sorry! The cheese actually goes in the mashed potatoes!

Do you have to spend $49 every week or is it just $49 every time you place an order? All of these delivery services confuse me, to be honest. Still, I’m really curious to try something out.

I feel like I’d need to buy a meat thermometer, though. LOL

Ooo. Cheesy potatoes sound lovely! Plus, the meat came out looking fabulous! I’m glad you’re enjoying these meals. I love reading about them!

      • Just every time you place an order and you have the option to skip of course!

Haha I usually just slice into it and make sure lol

Thank you! If you try one I hope you love it!

Another question – if you want to skip, do you have to pause the shipment? Or can you just, y’know, not order again until you feel like it?

You see, I have Graze boxes (delightful little nibblets individually portioned). What I don’t like is that, if I don’t want to get a 4- or 8-sized snack box, I have to keep delaying the shipment every 2 weeks. I wish they would just let me order when I want to order. Are any of the meal kits like Graze?

Sorry to keep asking these odd questions! You’re one of the few people I know who has tried so many of these new boxes. Thanks for all your help! 🙂

      • You have to keep skipping until you’re ready again. That’s what I’ve been doing.

I have Graze too! I love it. And any snacks I don’t like my stepmom does. You can’t pause Graze either? That’s annoying. I think you can change it to monthly instead of every 2 weeks at least cause that’s when mine come

No problem! I don’t mind at all. If you want you can email me cause I don’t check WP as often as I used to 🙂

I’m way behind on responding to comments & emails myself, so I don’t mind if it takes a while to respond. If I try them, or have any other questions, I’ll email you. 🙂

Yeah, I only want my Graze boxes every once in a while. Usually less often than once every 3 months. So, I have to keep pausing it. I would definitely have to do the same thing with a meal box – I simply can’t afford it too frequently.

Also, I don’t have anyone who likes the Graze niblets (as I liked to call them) that I don’t. So I like to wait until I’ve eaten them all. 😀

      • Yeah my Graze box comes once a month so maybe you can at least do that. But yeah I definitely can’t afford the meal boxes every week. Way too expensive
