This or That? #57

In case anyone needs a reminder or is new to the Bookmark Chronicles, here are the rules: Every Monday I will post a This or That Challenge where we will choose between two characters or scenarios. On Friday we will see which scenario/character wins. Feel free to either comment your choice below or make your own post and link it back here! :)

By no means do you have to feel obligated to do every single challenge, but I would love to hear all of your opinions! If you can only really talk about one scenario then go for it. Also, if you have any suggestions or would like to write a guest post about any of the This or That? topics let me know!

If you were to publish a book which would you choose between writing a novel or a collection of short stories?

I would do short stories. Writing is an incredibly difficult task and one that I don’t think that I am very good at. For my YA novel class I did write the first four chapters of a novel and I would like to finish it but I think that I want to change what I have so far because I really just don’t know what to do with it.

I think I would be better at short stories because I can get them over with quickly. Of course I would still put a lot of effort into it but a full novel has proved to be difficult for me. Since I do plan on trying to rewrite/finish my YA novel maybe I’ll change my mind eventually.

What about you? Would you prefer to write one novel or a collection of short stories? Let me know!

  1. Well considering that I’m currently working on a novel for publication (hopefully), I guess I’ll go with novel. :p I don’t like short stories. I feel like I can’t get enough of my world building into them, you know?

I am currently working on a novel, but I would like to do both! Sort of like Stephen King, although I will never be as phenomenal of a writer as him.

Short stories, for sure, although I think it would be fun to do a connected short story collection.

Definitely a novel. I don’t think I could keep in the word limit to do a short story!!

Definitely short stories. I can’t focus my attention long enough for a full-length novel, or even a novella! Trust me – I’ve tried. LOL

I also want to write a collection of creative non-fiction essays (which I’m starting to write/post here… one day… hopefully… lol).

Short stories. It is a challenge to put the story line in a few pages, make the characters come alive without detailed descriptions or a series of incidents over a long period of time. For reading too, I will pick up a collection of short stories, flip through the titles and opening lines and delve into the one which perks up my interest. It is a pleasure which a novel can rarely give.
