Rae’s Rules to Remember #40: #IAmAFeminist Part 2

So yesterday someone decided to repost part one of this post (you can read it here) with the caption, “The hashtag #IAmAFeminist thing, I wrote a tweet about being one to become a professional victim. Because that is all that 3rd wave, social justice whining is all about”

Both Carla and I have responded to this post. Carla’s comment is visible while mine is still waiting to be approved and I have yet to receive a response. This person identifies as a “humanist” so I’m interested to see what exactly their defense is and what they believe in. In fact, this person doesn’t even know what I tweeted and what if we actually believe in the same thing but call it something different?

Well these were my tweets:

Don’t ask me why #IAmAFeminist ask yourself why you’re not

#IAmAFeminist because the only people who claim that they aren’t don’t actually know what it is

#IAmAFeminist because it literally makes no sense not to be

#IAmAFeminist because it was never about making women “dominant” it’s about equality and equity

Where exactly is the “whining” in that? And honestly, all of these are pretty vague statements and don’t even get into the heart of my views as a feminist. Yet people told me that if I were a feminist that I must hate men, that I don’t think that women have equal rights and other stupid things

Here’s the thing though. If you don’t actually know how I feel about certain things just from those tweets. Why don’t you try asking me first instead of immediately going into an attack. Or are you really just that bored and pathetic that you enjoy finding people online to harass?

Once I started explaining that as a feminist I believe, simply put, in gender equality people started too back off. Because in fact, I don’t hate men and I think that their rights are equally important to women’s rights.

Of course some people claim that feminism is no longer needed because women have the same legal rights as men. True, but the reason that we still need feminism is because women aren’t treated the same as men. How many men have been catcalled? Groped in a bar? Had someone grab their ass just because they were walking by? Talked to like a child without any good reason?

That’s why I’m a feminist. And quite frankly I don’t give a damn if you agree with me or not. If we believe in the same things but call it something different, so what? I have my opinion and you have yours. We don’t have to agree. But talk to me before jumping to conclusions and save yourself from the humiliation of looking like a jackass and attacking me for no reason.

This really, in my opinion, ties into the conversation we were having on your other post: people get extremely defensive when they’re told that they have privileges that aren’t granted to other people. And, because of the (limited) anonymity granted by using the internet, people think they can say whatever pops to mind.

The funny thing is, I just read this article & it shows that they’re more likely to say it if you present as female. Funny how that is. http://www.baileythebookworm.com/#!IAmAFeminist-and-That-is-Terrifying/m0myu/579b43270cf29b70b6d37480
