While we are still mourning the tragedy in Orlando there is one thing that not many people are talking about. The majority of the victims were not only members of the LGBTQIA+ community (and their allies) but also identified as Latino and/or Hispanic (those two terms are not synonymous). Many of them were specifically Puerto Rican. I’m not saying that one identity is more important than the other. I’m saying that intersectionality is important and it needs to be acknowledged that more than one community was affected here. Especially considering that this was definitely a hate crime, whether people want to admit it or not.
Pulse Night Club is particularly popular among the Latino community and this tragedy happened to occur on the club’s Latin Night. So while you are sending your prayers to the LGBTQIA+ community and to Orlando in general, please do not forget the Latino/Hispanic community in those prayers.
