I mentioned a while ago that I was taking a class called Young Adult Novel. So far I really do like the class. We just finished reading Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson and now we are reading The Spectacular Now. (Well the class is reading it, I’m not because I already did and I hated it)
Other than reading YA novels, we also have to write our own. I am a terrible writer, and creativity just isn’t one of my strength but I decided to stick with the class to challenge myself a bit.
So for some reason my novel is turning out to be a mystery (sort of)… don’t know how why that happened but that is the direction that I’m headed in. Basically what I think will happen is that the main character’s best friend goes missing and she sets out on an adventure to find her.
Again, don’t ask me how I came up with this because I really have no clue lol
So yeah I don’t know. I wrote the first chapter and I’m working on the second now so I guess we’ll see how it goes.
There really was no point to this post lol I was going to go into details about the story but I’m still mulling it over. I am happy to take suggestions though 🙂
I enjoy hearing about your YA lit class (and wish I could find a class like it near me.) Have a blast with your own story; it’ll be so fun for you to see which direction it decides to go.

Thank you! Writing the first chapter was hard but the second is surprisingly easy. I’ll keep posting updates as I go 🙂

Sounds challenging! But sometimes it’s good to push ourselves with stuff like that, I guess. Hope it goes well for you. 🙂

Thank you! The chapter that I’m working on now is coming to me very easily so hopefully I can keep the momentum

That sounds like such a cool class! Is this at university? No uni here would offer that. Good luck with your book 🙂

Yes it is! But it was hard to find because in the course search it was under “Special Topics” and Thank you!

Whenever any of my writing started to sound like a mystery, and I’m not one to create mystery stories, I would always add another genre to it, like a scifi element to it. I don’t know, it’s not for everyone, but it works for me.

I wouldn’t even know how to do that lol I also don’t read much scifi so I wouldn’t know what needs to go into that. I originally wanted to do a dystopian but didnt know where to start

Well the way I usually start with my dystopian is by setting up the world. So for example, were is it located? Is the government doing its job? Are there different laws or customs that there weren’t in our world? Does the main character(s) agree with those viewpoints. Once those are established, then it makes it easier to weave in those elements into the story. I hope I made some sense in that and I didn’t confuse you.

No thats super helpful actually. Maybe I’ll keep writing after this class is over. I joined the class late so I didn’t really have much time to think about where I wanted to take the story

I wasn’t a big fan of writing for a while, but once I started, I couldn’t stop. I’m one of those people who has no idea where my story will end up, so I don’t put too much thought into it. But I wouldn’t recommend that because things get a bit hard to deal with once you’re past about 5 chapters.

Yea, luckily we only have to do four chapters but depending on how it goes I might finish it

Four chapters isn’t that long. Sometimes it’s really good to be able to finish a story or novel. I haven’t ever gotten to the finish of any of mine, but my goal is to finish what I start.

It sounds like you’re way more creative than you give yourself credit for! I wish you all the best. I took a young adult literature class and liked it. I hope you do as well!

Thank you! A lot of people had told me that but I think they have more faith in me than necessary lol I guess we’ll see how it goes
