Rae’s Rules to Remember #8: What not to say during Black History Month

So obviously February is Black History Month and of course, the complaints and ignorant comments are rolling in. If you do any of the things on this list then you’re a part of the problem that we face every single day.

I’m sure this could be a much longer list but, there are a few main things that I don’t want to hear this month:

“Why isn’t there a ‘White History Month?'”

  • We are in school from August to May. ONLY in February do we talk about African American History, so what the hell do you think we talk about any other time? That’s right, how your ancestors slaughtered thousands of people just to claim land.

“There are other races too”

  • No shit. They have their months too, but this one is ours. And don’t try to act like you suddenly care about all minorities. If you support minorities then you support all of us, all the time. Not to pin one over the other, or say which is more important. You do realize that we are all humans right?

“I don’t think we should have Black History Month, it’s not fair”

  • Was slavery fair? Oh okay, that’s what I thought. Is it fair that our entire culture is reduce to a month? No. Oh okay. Do you say that during Hispanic Heritage Month or Asian/Pacific Islander Month or any other month that celebrates minorities? Do you even know when those months are? Either way, just stop.

Moral of the Story: Don’t….just don’t

  1. I do hate it when people tries to pretend being concerned by saying that there should be “a white history month” or “any race history month”. Like for real, the whole 11 months is theirs whether they are aware of it or not. Why not just give this month to the black people?

    And on this one :

“I don’t think we should have Black History Month, it’s not fair”

I’ve heard that comment too. And people say that it’s unfair that the “white people of nowadays” are getting blamed for what their ancestors did. Well eff that. “white people of nowadays” are not being blamed for what their ancestors did. If ever that they feel that they are being blamed, then maybe the offense is not about what happened hundred of years ago, but of their racist attitude today..

  3. I totally agree with you. The reason there is no “white history month” is because whites aren’t a minority group and didn’t have to go through as much as African Americans did. There’s nothing wrong with celebrating black history. Just like we have holidays and celebrate presidents’ birthdays, etc. We have these times so that we can take the time to honor those who deserve it. This isn’t to say that a lot of other races don’t deserve to be mentioned, but, for examples, whites are given a lot of privileges that for years African Americans didn’t have.

I wrote this last year when I had just started blogging but it still applies. Seriously, if you’re the kind of person who complains about this month then you need to look at the big picture.
