Hello again and happy Monday! 🙂
In case anyone needs a reminder or is new to the Bookmark Chronicles, here are the rules: Every Monday I will post a This or That Challenge where we will choose between two characters or scenarios. On Friday we will see which scenario/character wins. Feel free to either comment your choice below or make your own post and link it back here! 🙂
By no means do you have to feel obligated to do every single challenge, but I would love to hear all of your opinions! If you can only really talk about one scenario then go for it. Also,if you have any suggestions please let me know!
This week I’m wondering..
Do you tend to read more by male or female authors?
The reason that I’m asking is because I recently realized that most of the books and series that are really popular or that have been recommended to me have been mostly written by females.(Ex: HP, Hunger Games, Divergent, Shatter Me, The Lunar Chronicles, Throne of Glass, Infernal Devices, etc.)
Other than Nicholas Sparks I don’t know of any male authors that have a large collection of books or even a series. So if you have a male author that you really like or are reading right now, please let me know. I would like to balance out my bookshelf a little, as well as find new authors. Please don’t recommend John Green (I will read Looking for Alaska but that’s probably the last thing that I will ever read by him).
Female or male authors which do you read more, and what male authors would you recommend? Let me know 🙂
I love these and especially love this one. It’s funny because for some reason, I’ve never really read a lot of works written by female writers. I love Harlan Coben, James Patterson, and John Saul. I’ve read some books by female authors but not nearly as many. So my answer is that I tend to read more books by male authors.

Thank you!! I’ve heard James Patterson’s name a lot but never read anything by him. Any recommendations?!

I think I have a pretty equal amount of male and female authors on my shelves. (They might lean slightly towards the female.) However, a male author I really enjoy is Steve Berry. He has a series based around his character Cotton Malone. I’ve also read most of John Green’s books.

Unfortunately, I’m not a fan of John Green so far but I will definitely look into Steve Berry! Thank you!!

I think I’m pretty much a 50/50 mix, although I’d have to check my shelves to tell for sure. Adult authors I enjoy would include Stephen King, Gregory Maguire (who has some younger audience stuff too), Jasper Fforde (witty/funny), and Neil Gaiman (uh-may-zing). For a more YA/kids style, Richard Peck, Daniel Pinkwater, Tony DiTerlizzi (highly recommended), and Neal Shusterman are ones I’ve enjoyed (none of which are John Green-ish).

I counted recently, because I was curious, and out of the 168 books I’ve read this year…about 30 of them were written by males. The rest were female. Funny thing is, I didn’t even plan it that way–it just happened!
Let’s see, I’d recommend: Patrick Ness; Joe Hill; Jeff Lemire (graphic novels); Neal Shusterman; Soman Chainani; Richard Due; William Ritter; and Garth Nix. They’re all so great!

I didn’t plan it either but I figured I could switch it up a little. I wrote down everyone that you listed. Thank you so much! and 168?! Thats awesome 🙂

You’re welcome–I hope you find someone new to obsessively read! 😀
Yes–it’s crazy! I’m not entirely sure how I managed to even do that. XD

I definitely read more female authors – but that’s just a chance thing. Like Sarah Dessen, Courtney Summers, Tess Gerritsen and Lauren Oliver are some of my favourite authors.
However, I definitely recommend the ‘Uglies’ quadrilogy by Scott Westerfeld, he’s really good. It’s a supposedly uptioan future (but really it’s dystopian). Also, ‘Stardust’ by Neil Gaiman is amazing (I love the movie, too). As for male authors I really like, that’s all I can think of for now … but I, too, love Nicholas Sparks (I think my favourite is Safe Haven. Although I preferred the book to the movie).

thank you! I heard of Uglies from someone else so I’ll probably read that. And I loved Safe Haven but I didn’t feel like the movie did it justice

I think I’ve told you about it before, to be honest!! I know!! I liked that he used to be a police officer for the marines, and he worked it out, instead of accusing her of stuff and then apologising.
